Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve and the surrounding forests, mountain, lakes, and streams, are wonderful places to spot a wide variety of fascinating animals.  The flat grasslands along 6 Mile Lane and CO 150 are home to a large herd of Bison on the Medano-Zapata Ranch, operated by The Nature Conservancy.

Bighorn Sheep, the males sporting their dramatic, curved horns, are often seen in high alpine meadows, but may also visit the dunes during the winter.  A large herd of Bighorn can often be seen in the valley below Music Pass, near the trailhead to Upper Sand Creek Lake.
