"Surge Flow"

playing in Medano Creek surge flow at Great Sand Dunes

Medano Creek flows in waves with an unusual surge flow.  Water accumulates, especially when sand ridges called antidunes form below the surface.  When they break, the increased water volume surges and creates waves of up to a foot high.  Stop and listen to the creek flowing.  You'll hear the changes in water flow as the antidunes begin to form and then break. The creek disappears into the ground along the eastern side of the dunes, and reappears miles away.

During a wet year, the surge flow can produce foot-high waves.  Families bring along their favorite beach gear and enjoy a day splashing in the water and savoring the views of the nearby snow-crested peaks.
